  • “There’s poison in our water.”
My name is Joe Weatherby. I have been a professional captain, diver, fisherman, snorkeler, unsuccessful treasure hunter and constant conservationist in the Florida Keys and Key West for over 30 years. I have spent my entire adult life working in and around these waters primarily engaged in augmenting fishing and diving opportunities through the creation […]
  • Courthouse parking, sidewalk dining, city approves both
Parking pay stations are coming to the formerly free-in-the-evening spaces at the courthouse complex and adjacent 500 block of Thomas Street. The Key West City Commission voted Dec. 3 to add metered parking to those areas. But the news isn’t all bad for Key West and Lower Keys residents who hold one of four different […]
  • Writing between the lines
There’s a secret language that exists among journalists and I may lose my press credentials for revealing some of our secrets here today. But in the age of fake news accusations and overly opinionated cable news networks, I figured I’d come clean and let readers in on a few of our trade secrets. First, as […]
  • Sculpture donated to bird sanctuary on display in gallery
Donors near and far have supported the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center and founder Laura Quinn’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release birds back into the wild. The support has come in various forms, including a bronze and stainless steel sculpture awaiting a new suitor. The sculpture, created by Cobert C. Collins, was presented to […]
  • New building, exciting programs at PKS
Students, teachers and administrators at Plantation Key School entered through the doors to a new state-of-the-art facility at MM 90, bayside, in Tavernier last January. With it came new technology and 21st century learning tools as well facilities such as a gym, which the old facility didn’t have. Guiding the school into a new era […]
  • “I don’t like that Key Largo will be made into a no anchor zone, but I think it’s necessary.”
If you have been living in the Keys for the last few years, you have seen the issues the reef is having. If you don’t believe that the reefs and seagrass need help, you have been living with a blindfold on. After reading as much of the NOAA blueprint I could, I have a few […]
  • Auxiliary Air ops group works with Miami station
Every month, highly qualified local Coast Guard Auxiliary Air Operations Group members work with the Air Station Miami to provide valuable training for the men and women who perform search and rescue missions in the southeast Florida area. On the morning of Nov. 26, the air groups met two helicopters a short distance from the […]
  • For one local, grocery delivery services have completely changed her life
If I had a dollar for every time my waiter recommended the fish tacos, I’d be cruising the Keys in a new yacht! My name is Daniella DeLucia, and I’ve lived in Islamorada since I was a tiny tot. My parents and I used to go to Lorelei every Sunday for jerk chicken. In fact, […]
